Importance of good communication in health care to improve patient safety. What happens when communication fails? A report from patientboard in Region Jönköping, Sweden, based on views and complaints from patients

The Patientboard recieves views and complaints from patients on health- and medical care. When the patientboard recieves this complaint they are categorized in different categories set by national manual for all patientboard in Sweden. Under the period 20200101-20210930 patientboard recieved 1589 complaints and of those 443 complaints was about communication when patient meet the healthcare. The communication was about, information, participation and attitude from healthcare personal. The complaints describes the problems that happens when communication had failed . Communication and dialogue are key. This means that everyone who works in care needs to involve and request the patient’s views, meet the patient with empathy and share their knowing. Healthcare needs to make better use of patients’ and their relatives’ experiences, knowledge and resources in patient safety work and strengthen the patients’ position
