Time To Take The Pressure Off

Time To Take The Pressure Off

Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) mask is a classic example of a commonly used medical device during the COVID-19 pandemic. Between Jan-Mar 2021, there was a significant increase (17.9%) in facial pressure injuries (PI) associated with patients on NIV. This prompted the establishment of a multidisciplinary team, aiming to reduce the prevalence of facial PI related to NIV from 5% to 2.5% in 6 months. The CPIP methodology was applied. Gaps were identified using flowchart, brainstorming, affinity diagram, fishbone diagram and Pareto Chart. A series of PDSA cycles were carried out to tackle each root. The project successfully reduced the prevalence of facial PI related to NIV from median 5% (Pre-Intervention: Jan 2020-Feb 2021) to 0% (Post-Intervention: Mar 2021-Mar 2022) and maintained sustainability phase till to date. The project provided an innovative, cost-effective, and safe approach to facial PI reduction. The skin prevention bundle was adopted across 6 ICUs within the hospital campus.
